Council Pres Lombardi Tests Election Prospects with New Poll (posted May 12, 2002)
Providence City Council President John Lombardi is testing his mayorial election prospects with a new poll in the field. According to voters called last week, the survey undertaken through the Zogby polling firm asked evaluations of the council as well as seven possible mayorial candidates, including Lombardi, current Mayor Buddy Cianci, David Cicilline, Frank Caprio, Angel Tavares, and Kevin McKenna. Interestingly, the poll had no questions on Cianci's corruption trial and on the list of top issue concerns, did not ask about the issue of corruption in Providence.
In terms of head to head matchups, the survey asked voters to indicate who they would support if seven candidates were running. Then, one by one, individual candidates were dropped to the point of a trial matchup of Cianci versus Lombardi. The order of the questions would appear to indicate the council president is not counting on a Cianci guilty verdict in his corruption trial.
